OVERVIEW

As the proportion of untimetabled renewable energy being fed into the National Grid increases so the problem of balancing electrical supply and demand becomes more acute. This problem has direct adverse implications for energy sustainability, affordability and security. EnergiVault Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is a smart cooling technology that complements and supports the ever increasing uptake of renewables, reduces energy costs and contributes to energy security. The technology is of significant financial benefit to operators of industrial cooling plant.

THE PROBLEM – FOR COOLING-DEPENDENT INDUSTRY

Industrial cooling loads tend to be relentless and are normally met by conventional gas compression expansion cycle chillers. Electrical energy costs varies widely throughout the day and peak demand periods attract significantly higher charges. The problem is how to shift the chiller’s electrical load out of the peak demand periods and into low tariff time zones. EnergiVault TES technology enables effective Load Shifting.

THE PROBLEM - FOR THE POWER GENERATORS

Power Generators in the UK have to ensure within tight tolerances that 50Hz frequency is fed into the Grid in order to reduce the risk of blackout and damage to downstream energised electrical equipment. Standby generation assets can be used to provide Frequency Response but their reaction time is too slow to match frequency variations which in real time occur in milliseconds. EnergiVault TES technology enables users of industrial chillers to provide Fast Frequency Response services.

THE SOLUTION

EnergiVault TES technology enables effective storage of cooling effect using low tariff energy and subsequent deployment of high intensity cooling in support of temporarily interrupted chillers for Load Shifting during high cost peak demand times e.g. when DUoS Red Band charges apply or for Load Shedding to effect Demand Side Reduction for Fast Frequency Response services.

LOAD SHIFTING

EvTES enables use of ‘wrong time’ low tariff electricity to accumulate a special form of ice which is stored in a thermal battery to provide high intensity cooling matched to the chiller output for the desired daily period of thermal support. EvTES is suitable for installation in Data Centres and other mission critical cooling operations where system resilience is essential.

LOAD SHEDDING

High output industrial chillers when coupled to a matching EvTES system enable chiller operators to benefit from the National Grid’s Enhanced Frequency Response service. The larger the cooling load that can be interrupted and the faster that the interruption occurs the greater the financial reward. EvTES because of its high storage capacity, high thermal density and instant reaction time is ideally suited to fast frequency response applications.

LOAD MANAGEMENT

EvTES systems are ideally suited to extending the cooling capacity at a site with a variable output but which is regularly operating close to its maximum capacity. Supplementary cooling effect can be accumulated from the main chiller during low-demand periods and used to boost cooling capacity at high or peak-demand times. This buffering effect contributes significantly to cooling system resilience.

TURN KEY SOLUTION

EvTES systems are simple and suitable for installation on live chilling plant with minimal interconnections to the supported plant. Individual Ev ice storage batteries can be installed in one or multiple locations, below, at or above ground but ideally close to the existing working fluid pipe system. EvTES is supplied with all necessary ice charging, battery charge measurement and associated control equipment.
